Most of us have seen high mountains in our lives and it is always truly awesome to be close to these giants of the natural world but most of us have not been close to the really hugest mountains that outscale anything we could imagine. This list shows the very biggest of the big with the absolute ten highest mountains that exist. Just imagine trying to scale one of the colossal pinnacles.
1 Mount Everest
Situated in the Mahalangur area of the Himalayas bordering Nepal and China. Known locally as Sagarmatha in Nepal and Chomolungma in Tibet. It has a summit height of 29,029 feet and is the worlds tallest mountain. Named Everest after the Geographer and Surveyor General of India George Everest. Most common challenges when climbing the Everest are altitude sickness, weather, wind, avalanches and the Khumbu Icefall. First successfully climbed by Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Nepalese sherpa Tenzing Norgayto in May 29, 1953. There has been 210 deaths related to climbing the mountain out of 3684 attempted ascents.
On the border of Pakistan and China and the second peak of the Karakoram mountain range. It has a summit height of 28,251 feet and the tallest point in Pakistan.
This mountain has a summit height of 28,169 feet, located on the border of Nepal and the Indian. It is the highest peak in India and the second highest in Nepal only Everest being higher.
The mountain has a summit height of 27,940 feet bordering between Tibet and the Khumbu region of Nepal. The first ever attempt to climb this mountain was only in 1955 when Norman Dyhrenfurth headed the International Himalayan Expedition.
This mountain is shaped like a pyramid with a summit height of 27,766 feet, located in northeast of Nepal and south-central Tibet and is only 12 miles southeast of Everest bordering Nepal and China.
6 Cho Oyu
Situated just 15 miles west of Everest this mountain has a summit height of 26,906 feet. Cho Oyu in Tibetan term translates as “Turquoise Goddess”.
7 Dhaulagiri I
Thus beautiful mountain that lies 70 miles from the Kaligandaki River. It is the highest point of the Gandaki river basin with a summit height of 26,795 feet. Dhaulagiri means “Dazzling White”.
Situated in the Mansiri Himal of the Himalayas in north-central Nepal this mountain is known locally as the “Mountain of the Spirit” with a summit height of 26,759 feet.
9 Nanga Parbat
The summit elevation is 26,660 feet. Located in the Gilgit Baltistan region of Pakistan, and known locally as ‘Deo Mir’ but because of the dangers involved in climbing this mountain it is also referred to as “the killer mountain”.
10 Annapurna I
Annapurna I is in the Himalayas region in Nepal. It stands 26,200 feet. Annapurna in Sanskrit means “Goddess of the Harvests”.
